Sustainability

Houseplants are a long-term relationship, not a purchase. The way we work is built around that idea — choosing plants that will thrive in your home rather than ones that will need replacing, and looking after them properly once they’re there. No greenwashing, just what we actually do.

Key Sustainability Activities;

  • Peat-free soil, always
  • Rainwater used for watering wherever practical
  • Locally sourced, based in Great Bookham and covering Surrey and London
  • Video consultations available, cutting unnecessary travel
  • Environmentally friendly and ethically sourced options offered on every project

How we choose plants

We select species to suit the light, humidity and space you actually have, not the other way around. A plant chosen for the wrong spot rarely lasts — that’s wasted stock, wasted money, and a wasted plant. Getting this right at the start is the single biggest thing we do for sustainability.

Peat-free, always

All potting and repotting work uses peat-free soil. Peat bogs take centuries to form and store carbon for millennia — once dug up, that’s gone. It’s a small switch with an outsized impact, and it’s a non-negotiable in how we work.

Water, thoughtfully

Where practical, we use rainwater rather than tap water for care and maintenance visits — better for many plants, and a lower call on treated mains water.

Care that extends a plant’s life

Our Care Visits exist to keep plants healthy for years, not months. Regular attention — repotting at the right time, pest checks, feeding — is the difference between a plant that’s thrown out after a bad winter and one that’s still thriving five years on.

The Houseplant Hotel

When clients travel, plants are too often left to fend for themselves, or abandoned altogether. Our boarding service means a change of routine doesn’t mean a dead plant — extending the life of the same plants your home is already suited to, rather than starting again.

Video Consultations

For clients outside our usual travel radius — or anyone who’d simply rather not have us visit in person — a video consultation covers the same ground as an in-home visit: a questionnaire and room photos in place of what we’d normally assess on site, a video call room by room, and a written plan with recommendations and sourcing suggestions afterwards. Fewer road miles, same expert eye.

Working locally

Based in Great Bookham, we cover Surrey and London within a comfortable driving radius, buying and working locally rather than shipping plants and materials long distances.

Pots, materials and sourcing

Two things matter equally to us: the environment, and the people behind what we use. Clients are always offered environmentally friendly options for pots, materials and accessories, and we care about where things come from — ethically sourced, not just attractively priced. We won’t pretend to have every answer, but it’s a standard we hold ourselves to on every project.
